I have spent over two decades working in corporate environments. Designing homes for some of the most demanding clients you will ever encounter. Managing relationships, navigating difficult personalities, holding the room when things got tense. I was good at it. I was the top salesperson in my company for nine consecutive years.

And for most of that time, I was also carrying things that had nothing to do with work. Grief I had not processed. Relationships that were costing me more than I let anyone see. A version of myself that I performed every day in that showroom while the real version was quietly running out of road.

I kept the two worlds completely separate. That is what professionals do. That is what we are trained to do.

What I know now, having come through the other side of it and having built a body of work around this exact dynamic, is that the separation is an illusion. The man you are at home is the same man making decisions in that boardroom. The unprocessed weight you carry into Monday morning is running the room whether you acknowledge it or not.

What organisations are actually dealing with

When a senior leader disengages, the organisation feels it before it can name it. Decisions slow down. The quality of presence in meetings shifts. The people under that leader start to mirror the energy, the guardedness, the absence of genuine connection.

When a team member is carrying unresolved stress, grief, or emotional weight, it does not stay contained to their personal life. It shows up as inconsistency. As conflict that seems disproportionate. As a capable person who keeps underdelivering in ways that no performance management process can seem to fix.

Because performance management does not address root causes. It addresses symptoms. And the root cause of most human performance problems is not technical. It is emotional.

I am not the first person to say this. But I am someone who has seen it from both sides. As the person performing through unprocessed pain. And as the coach sitting across from the people who are doing exactly what I used to do.

The cost of emotional suppression in professional environments

There is a particular kind of leader that South African organisations produce in significant numbers. Capable, composed, experienced, and emotionally sealed. He has learned that showing vulnerability is a liability. That the way to hold authority is to never let people see that he is struggling. That strength means containment.

This works, for a while. And then it stops working. Usually at the point where the accumulated weight of years of suppression starts leaking into the spaces he can no longer control. His patience shortens. His creativity narrows. His ability to connect with the people he leads, to inspire them rather than just manage them, quietly disappears.

The organisation responds with programmes. Training days. Wellness initiatives. Productivity tools. All of which address the surface while the foundation continues to erode.

What is actually needed is something more precise. A structured process that works at the level where the real issue lives. Not a conversation about strategies, but actual subconscious reprogramming of the emotional patterns that are driving the behaviour.

That is the work I do. And it is not soft. It is the most results-driven work I have ever seen in twenty years of professional life.

What this looks like in practice

When I work with an organisation, I am not coming in to run a motivational workshop. I am coming in to work at the level where performance actually changes.

That means working directly with individuals. Identifying the specific emotional and subconscious patterns that are limiting their capacity. Using tools like Negative Emotional Therapy, NLP, and Inner Conflict Therapy to clear what is actually in the way. And building a new internal architecture that supports the kind of leadership, resilience, and presence the organisation needs.

The results are measurable. Not because I claim they will be, but because when the root cause is addressed, the symptoms resolve. When a leader stops carrying five years of suppressed grief into every meeting, his decision-making changes. When a team member’s inner conflict is resolved rather than managed around, his output changes.

This is not theoretical. I have lived the before and after version of this in my own life. I know what it costs a man to perform through unprocessed weight. And I know what becomes possible when that weight is genuinely removed rather than better managed.

For the HR leader or people manager reading this

If you are responsible for the performance and wellbeing of people in your organisation, and you have started to suspect that what you are dealing with is deeper than what your current tools can reach, I want to offer you a direct conversation.

Not a proposal. Not a brochure. A conversation about what is actually happening in your team and whether this work is the right fit for what you are trying to solve.
